01 "Life on the Shore: A Non-Surfing Wife's Journal Entry"

When Vicus went to Krui the first time, I was happy to support him in this adventure. He’s always had a passion for bodyboarding and a holiday away with his surfing buddies would be a great opportunity for him.

Never in my life did I think that I would be joining him a couple of years later falling in love with the island and its people and planning another trip back!

Let me put it into perspective: I’m the girl who tans and maybe cools off once or twice in the pool (preferably with a cocktail in my hand). I last joined him at the beach when we were still dating, because very early on in our relationship I learned that to go to the beach with a surfer invariably meant that you would be driving around for hours in search of the perfect wave and when you finally did get the perfect spot, it wasn’t always the best spot for the one staying behind on the beach since you wouldn’t always be close to a public toilet and facilities.

The other factor: I’ve never been much of a swimmer (I believe “stylishly drowning” would be the term to use) and I don’t do “roughing it” very well. Give me a comfortable bed, air-conditioning, and a Western toilet and then I’m good as gold.

When we went to Krui in December 2023 I finally understood what drew him back to the island so many times before. Of course, it was the surfing, but there was more to it. I suppose I could simplify it and just say it’s the “island mentality” of slowing down, taking everything in, and enjoying the beauty around you.

I’m excited to be going back, making new memories, and seeing some old and new faces. 

I will be looking back on our first trip and share a few stories and experiences, which will also give you a better idea of why we are going back again.
