13. Life in your years...

It was recently my 37th birthday. I am officially in that age bracket where I have to remember my birth year and calculate how old I am. Do you remember the good old days when an adult would ask you how old you are, and you couldn’t wait to answer, and you would hold out eight fingers? Those were the good old days…

With the birthday also comes a sense of urgency for me.

No, I don’t see myself as “old”, but inevitably you start to assess how many years you might have left on this earth and what you would like to do on it with your time left. What’s important to you? Are you reaching the goals you set out for yourself, or did they maybe change?

Most of you probably thought: “Finally! She’s realising that the clock is ticking and they want to start with a family!” Thanks for that, and it could probably start a whole new blog about how it isn’t anyone’s business… And although it might still be in our cards - I was actually thinking about Krui.

I’m blessed with a supportive family and friends circle and my Pilates studio is doing well… But what is it about this little island in Indonesia, that still calls my name?! At first I thought it might be peer pressure. Vicus is absolutely in love with the island and the people, so maybe he’s influencing me? My brain tried to rationalise my feelings. And I realised once again that it came down to how I feel on the island. I’m not constantly checking on my phone or thinking about work; I’m not bothered about what I wear or how I look. I’m just… me.

I want to remember that as I take on the rest of this year. Even if we don’t get the opportunity to return to Krui this year, maybe I can bring a little bit of that island-vibe back home and let go of the little stuff; take in the view and breathe.

It reminds me of a well-known quote by Abraham Lincoln: “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
